Care guide
Keeping your betta healthy
Bettas (Betta splendens) are hardy and personable, but a few basics make a huge difference. Here’s how we keep ours.
Tank & water
Give a single betta at least 5 litres — 10–20 L is better. Use a gentle filter or do regular partial water changes (25–50% weekly), and always dechlorinate tap water before adding it. Bettas breathe air from the surface, so never seal the tank completely.
Temperature
Keep water at 25–28°C. Most Philippine rooms sit in this range naturally; only air-conditioned spaces may need a small heater. Sudden temperature swings stress the fish.
Feeding
A betta’s stomach is tiny — about the size of its eye. Feed 3–4 quality pellets once or twice daily, with the occasional treat. Our Food & Care aisle has the colour-enhancing pellets and freeze-dried treats we use.
Tank mates
Keep males solo. If you want a community tank, peaceful species like snails or small shrimp can work in a larger setup — but watch temperament. Two males will always fight.
Frequently asked questions
Q. What size tank does a betta need?
A single betta needs a minimum of 5 litres, but 10–20 litres is far easier to keep stable and healthier for the fish. Bigger water volume means more stable temperature and cleaner water.
Q. What water temperature is best for betta in the Philippines?
Bettas are tropical and do best at 25–28°C. In most of the Philippines room temperature is fine year-round; only air-conditioned rooms may need a small heater.
Q. How often should I feed my betta?
Feed a small amount once or twice a day — about 3–4 pellets per feeding. Treats like freeze-dried or live bloodworms 2–3 times a week. Avoid overfeeding; uneaten food fouls the water.
Q. Can bettas live together?
Male bettas are territorial and must be kept alone or they will fight. Females can sometimes be kept in a 'sorority' in a large, heavily-planted tank, but this needs experience.
Q. Do you ship betta fish nationwide?
Yes. Mic's Betta ships across the Philippines via Flash Express, with proper heat-pack-free, oxygenated fish packing. Metro Manila buyers can also meet up.
